Tijuana Marathon

Its hard to believe that 3 years ago my dad and I ran the Tijuana half marathon. This is a video I made back in the day about our mini T.J. Half marathon experience. It was a great race really well put on and its free.. They had great music playing and misters too. I felt really safe down there too.
I found out last week that the Tijuana Marathon was coming up and since I am supposed to run 20 Saturday 10 Sunday I thought why don't I sign up and do 5 Saturday and 26.2 on Sunday good Idea right ??
Sunday is the day that I will running my 3rd marathon for the year. I am excited and nervous. I know once I am down there everything will be fine and I will be glad I signed up. It's always like this the days before I think "what was I thinking that's a long way to run." Then I start running I am loving life and I can't wait for the next race when I am done. I know its going to be hot so I am hoping for 4 hour marathon give or take a couple minutes. I am not  going for greatness I am going for a good solid training run with a medal please… I think the only thing that may make it hard is the heat so I am taking my camel back with GU brew and keeping hydrated until then. I will fill you in with the whole story when I get back but for now keep me in your good running thoughts Sunday as I run in Tijuana.. Did you know I born in Tijuana ? I was and I speak fluent spanish so it should feel cool to run in MEXICO…Happy miles
 Here we are 6 am..
Our sweet medal.

Noble Canyon 50k and me

I took this picture at about 6:45 am. I had already picked up my bib number #104. I also got some cool socks and a new running shirt. The weather was a little overcast but it was very nice to feel the cool breeze. My biggest fear was that it would get to hot. I do not do well in heat.

Here is the starting line.. I can spot about 4 people I know in this picture. I thought it was cool that at 7 am they said OK..5 4 3 2 1 Start. There was about 150 runners. The vibe was really cool. Everyone was so nice.  It is unusual for runners to say "good morning" the day of a race but not here.  I felt so relaxed.. Let me tell you that I almost threw up twice in the car on the way to the race, my tummy was a mess.  I was trying to be tough but  I was so nervous that I wouldn't finish the race. Having other runners say good morning and good luck helped me relax.  The group of people that came to run Saturday morning are all good people. The first 2 miles where through the camp grounds.  I said good morning to a bunch of runners and settled in between two girls.  It takes me about 3 miles to find my pace.  So having a flat couple miles in the beginning was the perfect way to start.  I like to ease into a race.  I was so observant of all the other runners. There were all sizes, all ages, fast runners, slow runners all here for the same goal "finish."  Everyone just wants to do their best and run their own race.  I love looking in front of me and then behind me and what I see are majestic mountains and beautiful runners... I was in heaven.

It was a technical trail. Technical trails are narrow, dirt and rocky paths offering every variety of challenge that most people associate with trail running.  So I had to keep looking down to avoid tripping and falling on rocks. I ran a lot with my arms out to help me with my balance.  I didn't look very graceful but hey.. I didn't fall..  Along the way I had six GU's with me(w/ roctain).  I only needed 4 which means I was feeling great. I also had plenty of salt tablets with me and those would prove to be key. It looks warm in this picture but it was really nice.. There were only a couple times that the clouds were not covering the sun. This picture picture was one of those times.. Honestly the weather could not have been better.

This is how I felt most of the race..Happy to be there ..

It was beautiful out there. I prayed and I just felt so grateful. You know I spend about 35 hours a week with my sister. She has never walked and she can't talk or tell me how she feels.  After her operation last year she can't eat solid food anymore.  When I am out here in this beautiful canyon I feel really grateful.  Here I am running  and living my life. I always think I am so lucky. My sister will never get to experience anything like this and that sucks so I try my hardest with her in mind.

Beautiful.. I never really got tired or felt bad. I did get a bad road rash on my back from the camel back in combination with the sport bra I was wearing . There were lots of aid stations and they had everything you needed. They even told you what you needed if you were to tired to say so. These people are trained to help you out. The second half was hard. It was mostly up hill but you just have to keep going and try not to walk to slow or sit down. I never sat down and I avoided walking as much as I could but I walked. I was surprised every time I looked up. It was so pretty and green. There was a stream and huge trees that provided much wanted shade. San Diego honestly has so much to offer. I kept thinking that I really need to bring my kids out here. This was and is an amazing canyon.

Here I am right before the finish line. I ran half of the race with my running bra undone because it was seriously chafing my back. I kept thinking about leaving my Nathan along the path because it stung but I decided to just suck it up. I knew I was about 2 miles out and I was so excited that I ran as fast as I could. My dad was waiting for me at the finish line.  He told everyone that is my daughter Gloria... so when I was running in all these strangers started cheering for me. It was such a cool moment..I did everything I could not to cry..

Here I am..Can you tell how I feel? Oh and by the way you have to kiss the Rat when you finish.. That Rat got lots of action..Yes I kissed it and it was a loud MUAH !!! Kiss

My finishing time was 7:37. That is what I expected. Thanks to the everyone who took the time to put this together. The organizers did a great job putting this race together. I felt secure and safe and it was marked really well.. I made some new friends John, Jeff, Mary and Cathy . I had a great time and I am looking forward to doing it again next year...I am so proud. I did something I never thought I could do but always wanted to do. I did all my training and it paid off. I finished!!! What did I learn about life during this whole experience???
Do not be afraid to work hard and dream big.  I did and I got a cool medal with a rat on it..

Americas Finest City Half Marathon

This was taken yesterday morning before the San Diego A.F.C half marathon. It's about 6 am and we are waiting for the bus to take us to the start of the race in Point Loma.  Let me just say we barely made it on to the last bus.  It is truly an amazing talent that I possess.  I don't know how I manage to barely make it on the last bus year after year..

This girl was funny she called herself the photo bandit.

This was the view from the last bus as we pulled up to the starting line... Can you see all the little runners?

One of my favorite photo's... It's my dad and I.. I felt like saying wonder twin power activate, shape of Cheetah, and my dad could be Ice water.   It was already 77 and humid at 6:30 in the morning...

Here I am in a running self portrait.  I was so hot at this point that I kept telling myself think about happy cold thoughts.  My reoccurring thought was jumping in my dads pool after. I it was really hot. You can train all you want but when it's hot and humid it totally messes with your mind...  To make matters worse my head phones broke because they got too wet.  I just wanted to finish.  My goal was to finish in an 1:50.  Do to the heat I changed my goal and hoped to finish under 2 hours. I finished just under 2:17.

I was so happy to see these ladies. I was fore sure happier to see them then they were to see me..

Yeah..another half bites the dust..This was not my best but it was not my worst. I know part of the problem was my legs were sore from all the training I have been doing. My legs were tired from the long run I did the day before. The fact is after I ran the 1/2 i went home took a nap and ran 6 more... After the race my dad and I had breakfast. It was great quality time and for us that is the important part. I hope you did something fun this weekend.

Tijuana Half Marathon

The Tijuana Half marathon was perfect. I first heard about the half marathon from an acquaintance at my Monday night run. I tried to find information online but there was nothing posted.  After several emails and a couple of calls I was able to find someone who gave me the email of the event coordinator. The director of the event gave me all the information I needed to sign my dad and I up for the race.  Upon signing up I had to set up a meeting to pay the entrance fee and pick up our bibs.  So get this... as soon as we see the guy my dad says "I know him, I read about him in the news paper..."  The guys name is Hector la Flecha and he was recently written up in the San Diego Union Tribune.  He has competed in and  won several marathons and half marathons that my dad and I have raced in. For example:
The A.F.C
San Diegito
The La Jolla
and he recently won the masters at the
San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon
The guy is so Cool..
So here we are totally excited, I felt like we met a movie star.

As you know I ran a 1/2 marathon on Saturday in Julian, CA so,  after a long nap, I drove to my dads. We had to be up at 4AM and at the border by 5:00. From there we took a bus across to the Starting line and by 6:30am we where running.  I am not sure if you know this but I was born in Tijuana Mexico.  I was running on the streets my mom and I used to walk when I was little girl.  I also ran by the apartment I lived in with my late Husband. The though of him made me sad but at the same time I talked to Roger (my late husband) and knew he was watching over me and cheering me on.  I could hear him saying... "Hey skinny what are you doing?" and just shaking his head.  It was not an easy run and I say that because I was tight and my legs were tired from the day before.  It was also hazy, hot and humid...  Despite the fact a ran a grueling race the day before I finished a respectable 2:03.  I was happy with that. They did a really nice job putting this race together. The streets were so clean and they prepared really well for this race.  I also saw lots of people from all over the world.. Tons of Kenyans, people from Colorado, Canada, Oregon and even Florida. They awarded lots of prize money and big prizes brings out big crowds.  Their award ceremony was so cool... One participant even won a new car.  In case you can't tell my dad and I had a great Weekend...

Til next time,
G

A Running Story

Here I am running during the San Diego Half and yes I am happy.
Can you tell? I just saw a good friend who happen to snap this picture.  It is funny to me that running makes me so happy despite the fact that I have to consistently work at it.  No different than relationships or a job...  I am far from being a great runner.  Although I did finnish 17th in my class on July 4th, Yeah ME!!! I love the social aspect of running as well.  Whenever I attend a race or a group run, I am very friendly.  Always sure to extend a warm hello or good luck wish to all I see or meet.  I don't feel I am a competitive person.  Well with the exception of my dad. Even then I am not upset if, on the rare occasion, he should happen to beat me... I am congratulatory and tell him he ran a good race, you beat me...  Last week I was at a race, with my dad, and I saw a lady I know.  She proceeded to tell me that we are running in some of the same race.  One in particular is only a couple weeks away.  I was like great I look forward to seeing you there.  She went on to say "Gloria I ran that race last year and I won it."  I was excited for her and congratulated her on the victory.  She then stated how hard the race was and and due to the heat lots of people dropped out.  I politely listened but in the bak of my mind I was thinking... Lady are you trying to psyche me out?  Trust me I am not trying to win the race I just want to finish and have fun.  I am attending the event because I love this sport and hello the cool medal...but I didn't say that instead I nodded and told her OK I'll see you in two weeks and I walked away... So here is what I learned from that interaction...
Negative yucky people suck!!!
Winning a race has never entered my mind.  I am a participant of running races, I am amazed at what the human body can do and always think, wow that person won...  I often ask the winners if I can take my picture with them... Yes, I am that girl... Believe me everything that woman said stayed with me... She intimidated me and t worked.  I have been thinking holy cow can I run this race? Will I  able to finish it? Will it be to hard for me? It's so dumb on my part. It's a half marathon... I have run lots of 1/2's.  I can do this.  I can run this race.  She is dumping on my to make herself feel better, that is seriously messed up...   The sad part is she was feeding my own self doudt and insecurities.. Next thing I know...ahhhhh..its alive!!!!
I learned so much from this interaction.. I learned that I would never psyche another person out.. Build up don't break down... This includes telling myself good things.. Killing the insecurity monster with in...  Let me leave you with this thought...  be nice to one another.  Everybody is fighting their own battle there is no need to pile on... I want people I know to be happy and do well. I am a lover not a fighter.

100 Miles Later...

This weekend I woke up around 6 a.m. on Sunday.  I put on my running shoes and went out for a short jaunt.  As soon as I was done I hurried home and got all of our stuff ready for the San Diego 100.  My kids and I were on our way to Alpine to see our good friend Jeff (he is married to one of my best friends Charlene)  finish the San Diego 100 miler.  This is something I  dream of doing and completing.  I was so excited to be able to be there for him and his family.  I have to admit I was selfishly super excited just to be there.  Think about it, I know someone who had the drive and the commitment to train for and complete a 100 mile race.  It is both crazy and amazing to me.  I had that same feeling inside as the day I met Kelly-Rea.. You know that holy shit I am about to meet someone who is a hero to me feeling..  I was just so happy to see all those men and woman finish something so amazing.  It really is a commitment of drive, passion and love.  It was also really great to be able to see a married couple that truly loves each other!!!  Jeff and his wife Charlene have been married over ten years and they are such a great team.  Despite the fact that Charlene was worried about him running, she was waiting for him at every aide station.  She brought him food, changed his shoes and cheered him on...  He may have run the race but he was not alone...  I guess for me the best part was watching this family, that truly loves each other, was that they all pull together for Jeff.  It's so nice to be a part of something so good.   So back to the story... Jeff finished the San Diego 100 miler yesterday.  I stood there with about 10 other people just waiting to see him do something great and he did.  Although all his friends and family were happy to see him finish, no one was happier than Jeff!!!

Thoughts on Day 3

Day 3.
After taking a some time off from running I am now going to do my 21 days straight of running.  I do this to jump start my training and I am start slow.  Today I ran 3 miles in 30 minutes. I don't mind starting off slow  but I look forward to an easy long run again.  I wonder how long it will take me to get to that easy run? Will it take 2 or 3 weeks?  While I was running my mine drifted to the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon.  I am sad because I won't be running this year.  I have been lucky enough to have taken part in 6 Rock n Roll marathons.  Looking back at my first I remember thinking "I was pretty fast"... well lets just say I was not.  I kept training and year after year I got better and better.  By the time I ran St. George Marathon in Utah I ran 3:53, that was my best finishing time ever... I was so excited.  That's what went though my head on my short run today.   A bunch of great race day thoughts and how much I love  running marathons.  I feel like Wonder Woman after I am done and the distance doesn't bother me anymore.  I used to stop and cry at mile 17.  By the time I ran my 3rd marathon that stopped happening.  Heck I haven't hit the wall in my last 7 marathons.  I do know I have to continue to train right so I don't hurt myself.  That means getting all my runs in, going to bed early and drinking lots and lots of water.  So tomorrow I will be doing a semi long run with my dad running ahead of me.   He loves letting me know he is ahead of me...  I am sure it will be fun and hard but If I want to run a full marathon and a 50k
this year, I need to run, run, run... I will keep you posted and by the way I did 6 pages in my smash book today.
I will share them next week...
XOXO

Half Marathon update..

My dad and I ran the San Dieguito Half Marathon yesterday.
It was so much fun.. My dad picked me up over at my sisters house . Around 6am. I was not ready but I got up super fast and got ready and was in the car by 6:15 and off we went. We got great parking and saw lots of people we know. The race started at 8 am. The weather was perfect and off we went. My dad started out ahead of me and that was fine with me. He lead the way until mile 8 and then I started feeling good and past him up but not by a-lot. I ended up with 2:03 time and he ended up with 2:06. It was a-lot of fun and I am so looking forward to the next one...

Racing Weekend Recap

This Saturday I did the spartan race. This is what I have to say this was the hardest I have ever worked for a medal. This race kicked my butt...I carried rubber tires and cement blocks were dragged . There was running and that was fun but the climbing hills on all fours that was so crazy hard. I think I would do it again but if you would have asked me that right when I finished I would have said no way Jose !!!!

Then on Sunday I ran the Tinker Bell half Marathon with my girlfriend.. This was fun and hey I got to run with huge fairy wings..

As you can tell I had a great time and we got to run through Disney land. We also got to see many many characters..

Then there is this medal... I love it !!! This weekend was a huge success. I had a great time and I got run and now I am sitting here with a very sore legs..but it was all worth it...
Hope you had a great weekend...

The running continues..

San Diego has had beautiful weather this week... So I hope I don't bore you with my running stories but it's the excitement in my life right now. Sunday was my long run day because Saturday I was not feeling so amazing. My dad went on a 4 week vacation and this was our first run together in over a month. I have to tell you I really love running with my dad. He is such good company.  He is all over the place and I love that about him. We met up at  Shelter Island at 8:30 am which is late but that's OK since I don't think either of us minded sleeping in a bit.  I told him I needed to run at least 3 hours because that's what the app on my phone said to do.  So he figured a way that we would take the same route and he could walk some of it and he took some short cuts.  He ended up running 13 miles and walking 2.
We ran by this lady flying in her jet pack.. There was a boat show going on and she was part of the entertainment..This looks like so much fun. There is so much to see when you run along the coast.  I really like that I am never alone there is always another runner near by. I love looking at the water and the boats and a lady in a jet pack.  How cool is that??  If you were running along side my dad and I you would hear this a-lot.         Wait dad..I need to take a picture!!!!

Like always my dad was really proud of me.. Way to go princess he tells me.. I have to tell you that I did fine running this weekend.  Like I have said before I am not fast and I am not trying to beat anyone I am simply in love with running and I want to share that with all of you. I did start carrying a back pack for hydration and its made a huge difference.. now I drink 70 ounces of GU brew about every 2 hours and I am so happy because before I wouldn't drink any water..( so dumb) Dehydration is one of the reasons I ended up in the hospital.  I don't ever want to get sick like that again so I am drinking fluids and lots of them and I feel so much better.  I almost wish I could wear my back pack all day long just so I would drink more water throughout the day.

Only about 5 weeks left until my first 50k..31miles..I am really excited maybe because I am looking forward to the whole experience.
Have a great day .

G goes up a hill...

  1. o
I wanted to share my favorite running song. I listen to it when I am getting ready to run up a hill...This is it.The Metro. Here is a little story about me. I love repetition I just do. When I see a hill coming up I feel two things one is a sence of show me what youve got G...The other is I need a good beat to get me up this hill and 9 times out of 10 I will listen to this song about as many times as I have to to get up a hill.. Ok, so one time I listened to it 9 times in a row...I know over kill but it works for me...Its a great song dont you agree.

Running=Happy G

I hope you had a great Sunday.. I just got done having a really yummi homemade Mexican dinner..Carne Asada with homemade salsa, tortillas beans and rice...yumm
So I thought I would share my weekend iphone photo pictures..First I ran over 30 miles this weekend. If you think I am crazy then you need to call the guy who invented the app I am using to train for my 50k that's just about 5 weeks away...I am following what my phone tells me.. Seriously I am not a fast runner just a girl who likes how running feels makes me feel... HAPPY
So, the good news is I only got lost one day...Yeah
The other good news is I am wearing what runners call a Nathan and I call a Camel back. I am drinking water while I run and its making a huge difference in my recovery.
I am also putting really good stuff in my water, remember a couple months ago I ended up in the hospital, the first thing they told me is that I was really dehydrated so I am not going to let that happen again. Here I am at about mile 2..It really wasn't that hot and there was lots of shade..

These are my new shoes..They don't look new but they are..There Newtons and they have a really cool sole. If you run with bad posture your body gets tired faster and your wasting lots of energy. If you strike funny, like pronate stuff like that this shoe helps you fix all that with pain. See if you don't learn to strike properly with these shoes you calves hurt so your body fixes your posture after a couple of miles so that your shoes don't hurt.. It works, my posture is better and I strike better and I have better form. All because of my shoes...cool stuff ..

That back pack is my Nathan back pack..cool
I am a dork its OK I know it...
I had a great weekend I ran a-lot but I don't hurt and it really helps with my confidence as I go try to run a 50k..to know I can do lots of miles even if its broken up in two days. I might be taking a-lot about my runs for the next 5 weeks because I am so excited about my next race. I wonder how running that distance will change me...I am excited to share my story about how I feel leading up to it..I even thought about changing my banner to a running banner but nah....
I am slowly jotting down mental notes of things I need in my back pack for long runs..
1. wipes
2. a bandanna
3.almonds
4.pretzels
5.glide
6. salt

7. lip balm
The cool thing is that I believe us girls love getting bags ready..
I hope you had a great weekend and if you haven't tried running or jogging try it..Its hard in the begining but its so good for you..

another running story...

Hi there...Sorry Its been a while. I have been hanging out with my kids and working and running.. I did have a nice three day weekend. I only have 2 of my 3 kids my heart misses my little girl. The weekend was nice but I miss my Isa.  I had a totally I would call it  character building run this Saturday.(This picture was taken right after) We ran or let me fix that I ran about 20 miles around Lake Hodges. Everyone else ran 22.. I got a little lost.OK, so I was born directionless.. I can get lost in a parking lot , oh wait I have. I know... you might think its beacuse I dont pay attention but I pay attention and get lost ...I cry because I get so frustrated with myself but crying helps no one..So I walk around until I find my way..So back to my story..Lake Hodges is a great run I can see that. Its all trail so its great training for the 50k I have coming up in August. I have to tell you that we were there by 6:30am so we could get started as soon as possible because of the heat..We should of been there at 5am....it got hot quickly
So I also started running with camel back and I dont do great with new stuff it takes me a while to get used to changes..so before I started running my head was in the wrong place..My complaining gremlins were all awake...So I started of slow and I think by mile 4.78 I started to feel good. So there I went just doing my thing...There is a place around lake Hodges that I should not run alone because I will get lost..and I did just that...I got lost..So now its Mile 14 and I am lost and its 90 degrees outside..
YUCK!!!
That's when you have to practice really good self talk.. Its also when you realize what you really need is water. Some how after running a really long distance in the heat knowing you still  have about an hour to go you must simplify your brain.. I tell myself that yes I can make it back and that this is fun (when its not) but I know I need to believe this because I am choosing to enjoy the next hour not let it tear me down.  So I find my way back after asking 3 total strangers ...excuse me sir...How do I get back to the bridge that's next to the freeway...Oh its over that hill....Thank you I say...Now, don't criticize me...because I am being totally honest OK.. Here's my brain..Does he mean go over the hill or go around it...because if I go around it I might get lost again but if I go up and down I should be fine...

Yeah...not so much....I eventually just kept moving and found my way out.I chose to go up and down the hill..It was kind of funny because I am by myself at this point and somehow I found the road but when I did I was coming out of the side of some hill onto the road and I am sure people driving by were like OK...someone got lost.. It was not that bad I guess...and there were some people running so I knew I would be OK...So now I start running back and yes I ran out of water and I wanted to cry because I was hot but I was still moving and just loving that I could be out there.so I think thats what happens to my brain I get alittle confused.....I kept looking around and I just felt really grateful that I love to run.(while I am so so hot).I think at some points when you run its a religious experience...One thing is I am never alone or really lost.. God is there with me.. He is that voice that gives me that excitement I need to keep going right. I think its actually pretty cool when I picture him running next to me.. Yes, I totally picture him with a Beard.
back to the story...We all finished the run..We all ran out of water ..We were all spent but  we all would do it again..Heck Yes !!!!.So what I learned is that which does not kill you only makes you stronger..
my self confidence is building and thanks to runs like last Saturdays it will continue to build...
Have a great day...and I know its hot but try to go outside today..Its good for you !!!

Running and Anticipation and a new outfit

My first long trail run was planned for last Saturday. I was really nervous because I  just kept thinking what if I cant keep up. What if I suck...I had a hard time sleeping Friday night and I  couldn't stop thinking oh boy  what if...I suck.....
Well the what if went like this. We left here at 7 got to the trail at 7:40. I had all my stuff and a fancy new outfit from the Running Skirts store here in Encinitas. I think we should always support local business if possible.
Check out there web site..
so I got a new running skirt ..love
and a new top...love
and new Newtons trail running shoes...love
So yes a new outfit even if its for running makes life more exciting.
back to my story...after stalling as much as I could we took of and it was not bad I actually did not feel the first 5miles..It was beautiful. Lake Hodges is a nice run. I guess you can go about 24 miles but we only ran 17...I saw a rattle snake too.. It was huge..I just pretended I didn't see it..I did fine until mile 15 were I got tired and just sat on the floor..Yup, just like a dogie when he is done walking..I was done..I gave myself 5 minutes to rest and tell my head to get up and then I was up and going. Only 2 miles to go..
I did love looking down and seeing my new fancy glow in the dark trail shoes...They teach your feet to run correctly through a little pain...but once you let yourself feel the shoe your form is way better..Life is like that too..
Pretty plants along the way....

Here is the lake.. I had a great time it was hard and I loved every moment...(maybe not the snake ) So what I learned was that I can do this trail thing but I need a-lot practice and a-lot more miles to go. I am excited to be training for yet another fun race...running bring me closer to nature and bring me to a really beautiful place inside of me...I highly recommend getting out even if its just for a walk...
Have a great Day...

Oh the pictures..

Hi Guys.. I got my pictures up..Yeah.. OK so this is the first time I saw my dad,
I was really happy I found him. He was going to re stock me with more water and
GU.
and it was nice to see a face I knew.
( I was happy)
Here is what everyone wants to see..Mile 26 means your almost done..
I love this picture because let me tell you that having a flattering picture of you running does not happen often..but I like this one..

Here i am with a mega ice pack on my knee. It really didn't hurt that much but ice always helps.

Here is my watch.. I burned 4440 calories..
Ran 27.78 miles
ave mile was 9.46
it took me 4:31 minutes How fun !!!!

You should totally try running if you can.
Its so much fun to find something that makes your body happy.
That feels good and is good for you.
