Saturdays good time run

I woke up at 4am yesterday. I was really tired and as I sat up in bed and came too I remembered why I was up and then this feeling came over me of simple happiness. I made my way to kitchen started my coffee maker and then got dressed. It has been about 7 weeks since I went out for a run with my friends and fellow Trail Crashers. I was honestly thinking man I hope I still remember how to do this. It was going to be a hot day out and so I took lots of water and I chose to use Tailwind and V-fuel. I don't think I can a GU for a while since Western States. All I remember is how it felt coming up and not down. 

Our group run was at Cuyamaca State Park and that's about 73 miles from my house. I was in the car at 5 am and about 15 min early to our run.  I was so excited to see the gang. I missed them all and I know with the heat we are having there is no way I would of ran by myself . We started running at 6:30 am and it was a long hard 12 miles for me. I feel out of shape and I gained some weight hanging out at home but you have to start in order to make it happen. I had a lot of those moments when you just feel tired and hot but I really embraced those moments and told myself G your back here running . The little cheerleader in my brain was cheering for me. The group added 4 extra miles for those that felt like running more. I joined them because I was so excited to be out there. Those extra 4 miles kinda kicked my butt because I did not take enough water and I started getting a headache. I finished with a smile and I am so grateful that I got to run with my friends on Saturday.. 

The only reason I would wake up at 4am is to meet with the TC and go for a run. I needed up running 17 miles and it was hard but I loved it.

Tuesday Thoughts

My Western shoes are cleaned up and my butt is back at it. I am doing what I love to do and what ignites that passion for running in me .. As of yesterday I am back !! I went for a run and oh how I missed it .. Then as I was starting my run  all those feeling of man I am slow came back. Its hard to start back at something but if you don't start you will never know what your capable of doing right ? I think so many times it becomes a little scary to start but the pay off is so much greater than the fear its so worth it. Today I did an hour of core work and later I plan on doing a short jog.
Mentally I can say this for sure I feel happier . I always feel so much better when I exercise. My mantra for the last year has been baby steps in all I do. This means just keep going specially when its hard just take baby steps G.  I must have said that to myself 1000 times at Western. I still can't believe I ran Western and the amount of love and encouragement I felt from my friends and family was huge. I didn't give up because I really wanted to make them and myself proud .. That's where baby steps came in . I have  had 4 babies so I would imagine little steps but progress for sure. You know Dream Big thing you read everywhere I totally get it now. You have to see your dream to make it happen.  If you can dream it then it can be yours sort of thing. Its true !!

Mommy Adventures

A day in the life of mommy adventures !!
One of my favorite things to do is to create an adventure day. I think its fair to say I don't like being home all day. I get stuff done around the house and since I can't really run right now to much because I just hurt. (not to worry that will change as soon as I heal ) I spent the morning completely reorganizing , painting and cleaning out the pantry. When I was done Jack and I went on a walk to lunch and then we decided to go the movies. His first movie. ( how exciting) They say you have to make your own adventure and it was.
I took the stroller and I knew little man would start of walking with me but our walk would be long and it was hot so the stroller would come in handy. We walked for about 30 minutes playing carwash before he decided he wanted in the stroller. We played  the alphabet game. We had so much fun and before you know it we stopped to have lunch. Lunch was also awesome . I find all these little moments in our day that seem to stand out. Time goes by so quickly it's almost like I am holding on to it as it passes through my fingers.  We walked to the movies and maybe this sounds weird but when you drive everywhere walking all day is really cool. The movie was a couple miles away so we listened to music and walked some more. The chances of making it through the movie I knew where slim but I thought the walking and lunch would make my chances greater of making through the movie and I was wrong. The movie was fun and we only stayed an hour and I did not mind leaving early. So we created our own adventure today and I walked 10,000 steps and little man when to bed at 7pm  because he was so tired from all the fun. Oh and my pantry looks awesome !!!

SUmmer days

Summer has been treating us well. I still have not gone for a run . I am letting those fractured bones on my feet heal and it has not been easy. I am so ready to go but my feet really hurt so I am finding other things to keep my busy. Jack and I have been going for walks as soon as we wake up and its really nice to get outside and just move. We have been using my dads pool a couple times a week and our latest thing has been taking Rock climbing classes. Jack loves it and he seems to be getting more comfortable with it every time we go.
I am definitely dying to figure out what my next goal race will be. I love having a big goal to work for. There are so many great races it is hard to choose. I am sure it won't be long before I figure what is next. Hard Rock is this weekend and I am fallowing my favorite runners as I type.  Hard Rock looks like an entire different animal as far as 100s go.
I hope to be out these running soon . Hope your summer is going well and your staying cool . 

Trail Crashers - Western States Endurance Run 100 - 2016

My thoughts today

I really want to share 10 of my favorite thoughts from Western States before I forget. I am still riding high from the experience and I am wearing my buckle as I type.
1. When the race started I remember climbing thinking OK I am at 6200 feet and I am going straight up to Emigrant Pass 8750 feet. A climb of 2550 feet in 4 1/2 miles. That's really cool that I can do this. Then my thoughts where I can do this! I can do this !
2. When I got to the top someone told me you need to keep going don't look around you don't have time. My thoughts where Don't look around really ? I stopped and took it all in nodded at that guy and went on my way. I guess he brought me back to the present moment and I was glad I really stopped to take that insane view in.
3. My favorite view . I loved the weather it was so nice and the runners in front of looked little and to my left where these huge canyons and trees it was glorious. I often think how cool it would be to have ginger runner talents and be able to film and then show these beautiful views.
4. Seeing my crew for the first time. I loved hearing familiar voices and knowing they love me enough to be here all day for me. How lucky am I.
5. I ran with a couple of really cool people I admire big time. They told me some stories about there favorite 100 mile races and I love that time when nothing else matters just the trail the story being told to you .
6. I thought a-lot about how lucky I was to have such amazing race directors who really care in San Diego. They know your name they make you feel like your really part of this group that loves to run. I admire our race directors there amazing ultra-runners and they put on great races. I wish I could do them all.
7. The pain. The pain was real but It was really cool to know my mind was in charge. I told myself no pain and it went away.
8. At mile Hwy 49 I had bit to go and I was so tired and as I ran I through the meadow I thought about The Trail Crashers and how much I love theses people. How when I started running with them  I was way slower 2 years ago  and they always waited for me. It seems so fitting that 5 of them ran in with me at the finish.
9. I remember trying so hard to run and barely running but it felt like I was winning. Does that make sense ?
10. My husband usually can't make my races because we have kids and Jack my youngest is 2 and staying home with Jack is easier for both of us. Mike was there the entire race and he crewed me and he has told me so many times how I can run any race I want because he saw how much I really love this and my passion is awesome . How cool is that. 

The Last Step

This picture says it all. Its crazy that up to mile 93  I was relatlvly doing ok. Its crazy what those extra 10 miles can take from you.  My recovery is going well. Everything feels like its back to normal except my feet. The recovery of running 100 miles with broken sesamoid bones I think is going to be slow. I am trying hard to be patient and not run. (holy cow its hard ) I have been thinking about the experience as a whole.
 It felt like a movie. Time does that it goes by really slow but then really fast and next thing you now all you have is a picture postcard memory in your brain. I do feel forever changed by running Western States. I feel more whole like the story in my life  has a really good chapter now  that I wrote in it.
Finishing was a group effort I could of never done it alone. It takes a village to run a 100 miles.
The one I did manage to do the entire time was stay positive. You know the saying a A negative mind will never get you a positive LIfe !!!

My Western States Journey

When we arrived to the start line, I kept looking at my bracelet. I kept telling myself: 'I belong here. I can do this.' I was crazy ass scared. Can I do this? Can I really do this? I kept thinking about the San Diego 100 mile race and how hard it was and how it took me 31:29. Now I am here at Western States and I need to take 1 hour and 29 minutes of my time.  REALLY?!

I got out of my head and looked around. Mike was standing in front of me and he said, it's OK you can do this. I chose to believe him.

Julianne was with me the day I found out I got into Western States. I asked her before the lottery if they picked me. Will you pace me? I have a huge admiration for women who are strong and I don't mean just physically. While inside, Robert was gone saying good luck to Ricky too. We went outside and with 4 minutes to go I saw Becca. I felt like I really wanted to see her and give her a hug because she was there with me for all our training runs. She knew this was my dream and we chatted about it for months now. You start training with strangers and before you know it these people are your best friends. You would give anything for them and that's how I feel about my training friends.

The race started and I was in the back. The very back. Here is the deal with me. I know what I can do. I knew I had to get up that hill as soon as possible and that would be at a slow pace.  There where 8 people in the back with me. I was slow but I was moving I could hear Becca telling me slow deep breaths and try not to hunch over. Breathing was the hardest part but I just kept hearing her in my head. Before I knew it I was at the top . I stopped when I finally got up and told the photographer Wow it is so pretty up here. He said don't worry you have all day to look at the views keep going. So off I went.

I promised myself I would not take more than 20 pictures. My speed has no time for pictures. I arrived at Red Star Ridge at 9:24am. It took me 4:24 to go 16 miles. My mind was blank this point . I knew this would be a long day and I just needed to go as fast as I could. At this point breathing was the hardest thing. I could not catch my breath.

Hello altitude.

The weather was awesome so far. I remember helping my friend Charlene crew her husband (Jeff Hooker) last year and the weather was so much hotter. I was so grateful it was not going to be that hot today. That made me feel lucky.  Honestly I really did feel lucky and grateful all day just because some how I got a number pinned on me that said: Western States : 126 : Gloria King.

With my husband and pacer crewing me at my awesome fast pace its safe to say there really was no time for pictures. This is me coming out of Robinson Flat. It took me 8 hours 15 minutes to run 29 miles. There was nothing easy about this course. Seeing my crew was comforting. This would be the only time during this race I would get to sit and that was for about 2 minutes. 

I moved along knowing that at Robinson Flat I would see my crew: Julianne, Mike and Isabella. I arrived at Robinson Flat at 1:15pm,  8 hours after starting. At this point I knew I was chasing the cut offs. I had told Mike I really don't want to chase cut offs all day. I don't want to be that runner but when I was there doing it I felt like: F--k it, I am chasing the cut offs that means I am still in the game! Yes, I am barely making it but I am making it so don't F--k around G. Just go!!

I find that being out there for so long this thing happens you end up shedding all the emotional crap. You are down to knowing the people you love. The people that love you back.

The next aid station was Dusty Corners and it was really dusty. I have to tell you about these volunteers. When I would run into an aid station they would ask: how are you? what do you need? All with concern in their eyes. They would surround me and ask me questions I did not think about. They filled me up with ice and gave me food and told me what I needed to do. The man at dusty corners, I think his name was Hans, told me we are at 38 and I needed to hurry and get to 43.  It's hot so take lots of water and ice and eat some watermelon. Then he said don't slow down. You don't have time for that but you look like you can do it. I thought to myself I can keep doing this 16:30 pace (my watch was still working at this point)

Next destinations were: Last chance, Devils Thumb, El Dorado Creek and then I get to see my crew at Michigan Bluff.

This was really difficult my thinking was this. G give everything you have aid station to aid station. Just keep moving and don't stop. If you get pulled you can look at your friends straight in the face and say I just did not have it.

This was my thinking as a very sweet 70 year old woman and I climbed up to Michigan Bluff. The flies where biting and I was dripping sweat. Then, to my left, is Ann Trason making sure her runner was doing OK.  I just kept walking and before I new it I saw Mike to my left and Julianne up ahead yelling go to the aid station get what you need and meet me down the road. I turn to my left and see Scott Mills I suddenly felt like everything was OK. He asked me what was wrong and I said I am tired. he gave me a small cup of coke (this is the first time I have had coke in a race) then he told me I had 5 minutes to get out of the aid station. 5 minutes?? Really!!

OK I ran out of there like my ass was on fire with my pacer. Maybe it was a slow run but it felt fast. So now I have Julianne with me. My mind felt recharged and I felt a  lucky that I got to have her for 45 miles. I had asked to run in front of me before the race because I wanted to consistently try and catch her. I didn't want her to run next to me . I love to talk and I needed to run. We had a really good time. I threw up about 20 times. I felt crappy but I just kept going. When we got to Forest Hill School, Mike brought me a red bull and I drank the whole thing I was happy to see him even if it was for 2 minutes. Then I also saw my friend Mark and that was so nice too. I was happy and ready to keep going with my pacer.

So, some perspective. It's now mile 62 and 11:26 pm. I was at the Forest Hill aid station for 1 minute. I had been running for 18:29.
I was cutting it close. Very close.

Julianne and I kept moving and she would tell me that was a good mile G. When I would say I was tired she would say can you believe we are running Western States. We are running Western States. I knew what she meant and I would think put on your big girl panties G and follow that girl. Our conversation was about getting to Rucky Chucky and how exciting that would be. To get in the water at 4am. I was worried I would be cold. Oh, and I forgot to tell you I actually carried my pack backwards for about 15 miles. I have an Ultimate Direction pack. Its great but my back was killing me so I put it on backwards and it gave my back a break so I just kept it that way until we arrived at Rucky Chucky. Then I took off my pack. Mike had my smoothie and I had a coke. (Coke during ultras are a great idea) I took of my watch and everything else . I picked up one water bottle and my small waist pack and I traded head lamps with Mike. Mine was fading. I felt light leaving the aid station and excited to go in the water but not as excited as Juliane. She was so excited. The water was freezing but across we went. The next part would be painful. My Hokas were freezing and running with cold shoes made my feet hurt so much. I complained to Julianne about my feet but what could we do. We continued to run/walk up hill for a while. So now we need to go from 78 to 93. I had a coke at every aid station and Julianne would get me to eat bananas and potatoes with salt. I thought about how much my mom loves baby Ruth's and then went on to think about my mom and sister. Carmen was with me at this race there is no doubt in my mind. I felt her with me. I felt her so close to me I could see her.

When we finally arrived at Hwy 49 at 8:56am, I heard Mike yelling. He told me you have to keep it under 17 minute miles to make it. I didn't know but I only had a time buffer of 6 minutes. I was cutting it close and there was not much left in my tank. I really felt like I was running on empty. Julianne and I ran through these beautiful meadows and I could feel myself coming to end. I prayed please let my finish and then I decided that my mind was in charge and over and over I told my legs to keep going.

When I got to Robie Point (mile 98.9), I felt it was over. I lost control of my breathing and I felt like I had nothing else to give. Julianne looked at me and told me she could see in my eyes that I had the strength to finish. If she believed I could do it then I would try a little bit more.  This is the part where I get crazy and started to look and lean to my left. In my state of zombieness, I see Fern. This guy is a crazy fast, fun, and out-going runner. We just met but he always makes me laugh. Anyway, out of nowhere, I see him and he starts yelling at me to move. I guess I only had a couple of minutes and I needed to do more than drag my feet. I can hear my daughter somewhere and more Fern. I tried so hard to listen to what he told me. Swing your arms back and forth Gloria. See when you have good form you move so much faster. He poured water on my head many times. Then I saw Becca telling me to breathe. My mind was trying so hard to listen but my body just had nothing left.

From somewhere inside, I copied the way Becca told me to breath and tried walking like Fern told me. I really felt drunk like I had no control but I was willing myself to finish. I knew I had a little bit of time left so I tried to jog as I swung my arms like a crazy person. My tounge is hanging out I have lost all composure but I was moving toward that finish line with the help of my friends. I saw Mike holding Jack right before I went into the high school  track and I just kept willing myself to move. My legs felt like jello and I could see Julianne to my right and Becca to my left. I remember thinking: 'ok I am on the right track, that's good.' I finally made it over the finish line and it was not graceful. Even that last step took every bit of will power I had left in me. I had nothing left. Nothing. The Western States course took it all and I was ok with that. 

So I crossed the finish line in 29:56 (only giving up 2 minutes from Hwy 49). It took every bit of everything I had and that's perfect because thats what I came to give. I am still in  disbelief that I some how  earned a buckle with my name on it. The best part was seeing my kid's faces and my husband's face, I made them proud. I feel proud of myself for showing up and really giving my all.

The moral of the story is this: if you have a huge dream and, believe me this was huge for me, do the work and keep at it. Even if you're not the fastest or the smartest or the anything. If you work hard for something, really hard, your chances of achieving your dream become possible. But you have to want it and you have to work hard for it. It's that simple.

Day 3 .. Its almost here ..

Day 3. Its almost here. Yesterday was simple we just hung around and waited for today.

Day 2 in Auburn

Yesterday, I woke up at 4:45 am. I couldn't sleep so I got up and made coffee and waited to go meet Becca ,Ricky and Robert for a short jog/run. We ran up the start line of the race. Holy Cow it was steep . The weather is really nice right now. It is not crazy hot. I wore my long sleeve and I was comfy. It is really nice having a girlfriend here that loves to talk running. So here is what I am thinking I am going to pretend in my head I have a 28 hour cut off. That way I can hopefully have a buffer for the later half of the race. The last 30 miles are when I felt like shit during my first and only 100. Having a buffer will help so much. I can not imagine how the elites must feel. I am hoping to finish and I feel crazy nervous. 

There is so much to see here. I can't say that my older kids are nature kids but they try. We went on some long walks . we need to get our steps in right ?

I also feel like its the calm before the storm. Last night we went in the hot tub and we all had dinner together and went to bed early. Today my pacer and sister in law fly in. So exciting. I am feeling crazy ass grateful . 

Squaw Day 1. We arrived

Yesterday I got up at 4:15 am and was out the door by 4:45am. Bella and I drove from my house to Sacramento to pick up the boys. I thought it would be better to have my car and all of our stuff so I drove. I am glad I did . I brought Jacks bed and his toys with me and by 4 we where all together. Once in Squaw we got settled in out cabin. (its awesome) then I called Becca and we all got together for dinner. We where STARVING.

Then we went for a walk around the village. A knitted gondola. How cool would that be in my back yard. The kids had a great time exploring.

Home of the winter Olympics in 1960. Thats a long time ago. The village is really pretty and I can only imagine how beautiful it must be in the winter.

Here they are my loves. I am missing Paola . The weather is really nice it was in the 70s last night and no humidity. They where having a concert and we did a little walking and unfortunatly Jack fell and got a big knot but he is ok. 

The sprinklers where on and Jack thought this entire thing was a car wash. He said "running mama". This is where the starting line will be on Thursday.

Then we all went to the playground and before we knew it the mosquitos where eating us. The day ended well. We got here safe and our little cabin is perfect. We saw our friends at this point I feel like we are family. We spend so much time together. I love it. Jack's little head is ok and as I sit here drinking my coffee everyone is sleeping. 3 more days until the big race. I am going to go for a run in about an hour . I find it hard to believe that I am going to be able to run Western. I promised my self not to take any of it for granted. I am going to run with a grateful heart and practice being present. 

Saturday Ramblings

The day is almost here and yes I would say that I am way less scared and way more excited. I did my 10 mile run today and I felt fine. I kept think I just have to do 10 miles 10 times up and down awesome trails. I can do that
Here are a bunch of stuff I thought about on my run today.

I decided today that I just need to stay calm during the race. Sometimes in the middle of long races I decide I am going to go fast and then I blow up. I am going to try and not do that.

I am still not sure about how you keep eating after mile 60 but Its going to be Carbo pro and nuts and small pieces of chocolates and apple sauce.

I am going to focus on the aid station to aid station. I told myself it's two 50 mile runs. 0 to 50 and 50 to 100.

I also got the cutest outfit. A cute lulu lemon orange shorts and mint green top.

Wednesday thoughts

Yesterday was a little strange I caught up with an old friend and the idea trying to be grateful and live in the moment just went out the door. I caught myself thinking about the past all day. I understand the concept not living in the past or the future because you can't change it. The best thing seems to be trying daily to be present and that brings you a little bit closer to being mindful and present and living more in gratitude. This practice makes my life more enjoyable and I feel more connected when I do this.
Some how as the race gets closer I am starting to feel  calmer. There have been so many times in my life where I ended up places where I felt I did not belong or where I felt everyone else was better than me so what was I doing there. At 44 I figured out that I always belonged and that was my perception. You do not need to be the best you just need to try your best . When you do that then your wright where you are supposed to be. Showing up is half the battle and the other half is giving everything you have got. Whatever the outcome you have honestly is not the point its that freaking journey... 

Monday thoughts

Today I woke up at 6:30 and the plan was to be out the door by 7. I woke up with a heavy heart after hearing about Orlando and I ended up baking my Peanut Butter breakfast bars. I can not imagine what those families are going through after seeing pictures of the actual people who had there life taken away from them my heart hurts. That's someone daughter and son. My heart just feels heavy. For me Love is Love.
I went for a run and ended up hitting the trails for about an hour and a half. Running always helps me put things into perspective. I came home and loved everyone in my home a little bit better. I showed up more throughout my day and I will keep praying for peace and Love. 

Saturday Thoughts

I woke up at 4 am this morning. Christopher and I volunteered for the woman's wine half marathon. It was about an hour away so Robert joined us and we made it there on time. We had to be out the door by 4:50 am. I really like helping out and getting a chance to be on the other side of the aid station. I have had so many people help me out at races I felt like when I can I should give back. It is really fun. I also need to keep busy because I am so crazy nervous about WS that I need to do stuff. I came home did my core work. So much fun. 20 push ups -100 sit ups -and 50 squats- lunges. I did not run today my body is still resting and my feet are a little sore. I made a  dinner- home made BLT with killer thick bacon and banana chocolate cup bread .I did not eat the bread but everyone else did. I do adore when everyone in my house has had enough to eat. That's all for today.

Part 2 of Western States training camp

Back to training camp. Day 2 we woke up really early and got our packs ready figured out what we needed for food and if I recall I spilled a bunch of water on the floor because I was so tired just trying to get my stuff ready so early was a challenge. I am always afraid I will forget something but the true beauty of running is you do not need much. A good attitude, coffee and water and some nutrition. I loved that my friends where with me. I told Becca I felt like we where on a Running Honeymoon.
The thought of knowing all I had to do was show up and run was awesome. The second day was easier than the first. We only had 20 miles to run so that thought was nice. The view was amazing. When you don't live near a trail and it is your first time taking it in it is magical. The river was to left and the canyons where so green. What I took away for race day is I just need to stay focused and keep moving forward. Julianne Becca and I totally bonded . Thats what I think and Ricky is so much faster that we only saw him at the end of each run but he the nicest guy. ( Becca's husband) aka super fast awesome runner. The aid stations has everything we needed. They took a while to get to and as soon as we did the guy said " oh your doing fine your 1 hour before the cut off" I hate the word cut off. It really got me thinking about my game plan for the race. The end came way quicker than I thought it would and they had food for us. I had a burger and chips and we waited for the bus. Some of the cool things where seeing some of the amazing runners I have a huge admiration for. Ann Trason, Sage Canaday , Magdalena Lewy-Boulet to name a few. Always cool to see them in person. I did not ask for a picture because I think they is there time on trails and there training . We needed the day by going out to islands for a quick dinner and then we went to the trail in motion picture festival. I saw Gordy speak ad he is a character. Very funny guy and a great story teller. Bed time came early because we would do this one more time in the morning and we where all tired. All together we ran 72 miles in 3 days. It was an amazing trip . We all got along and the runs where epic.  I would highly recomend doing the training camp even if you don't get it to the race. 14 days to go and we are at race day. Have great weekend..
